During the Spring Bear season, Dan needs to be prepared for all four seasons of weather at a moment's notice. His gear collection contains several must-have items for hunting steep and heavily timbered pockets where bears love to hide.

4 ITEMS THAT DAN NEVER LEAVES THE TRUCK WITHOUT:

  1. Trail Cameras (StealthCam 4k) - Prime bear country often overlaps with prime elk country - Dan saves a trip back into the mountains by packing a trail cam or two with him for easy set up when he comes across an Elk wallow or rubs)
  2. OnXMaps Hunt App- Though the areas Dan hunts are deep into national forest, he still lives by the OnXMaps Hunt App to give him accurate waypoints to his top spots, satelite imagery to pick up on hidden timber cuts, and their roadless area to get him as far away from other people as possible.
  3. Trekking Poles (Leki)- Dan keeps his poles broken down and stashed in his pack. He doesn't need the extra traction while hiking in, but if he's sucessful in harvesting a bear, and is coming out with a heavy pack, being able to shift into 4WD is HUGE for reducing wear and tear on his body.
  4. Kahtoola Micro Spikes- Spring Bear can deliver a mix of hiking conditions. One minute you're on a dirt trail, the next you're postholing through crusty thigh deep snow. Dan keeps a pair of Kahtoola Micro SPikes in his pack in case things get slick out there and he needs a little extra traction while up in the rocks.
