On 10-14 day expedition style hunts, Jim must be prepared for anything that Mother Nature decided to throw at him. Rain, snow, sleet, and extreme wind are all expected and planned for. Jim's gear recommendations can be adapted to fit most any mountain hunt.
4 ITEMS THAT JIM NEVER LEAVES HOME WITHOUT:
LEKI TREKKING POLES - These poles are lightweight and compact, but a real life saver. Jim brings two along because in the backcountry, 4WD is typically better than 2WD.
A GOOD CAMERA - Jim likes the Leica Compact series - they fit in a backpack or cargo pocket, and you can easily access whenever something incredible happens.
LIGHTWEIGHT PACKABLE WADERS (WIGGY'S) - Creek crossings are a formality on backpack sheep hunts. Rather than having to cross in bare feet and underwear, Jim opts for a lightweight set of packable waders that slip on over boots.
KNEE SUPPORT - Sheep don't live in the flat ground...areas like the Mackenzie Mountains in NWT require many miles of side-hilling and sliding through scree slopes. A little extra knee support never hurt anyone and these Bauerfeind's are the best low profile knee braces he has come across.
