...but there is nothing I'd rather be doing. We began designing and building boots after a ten day hunt in the Mackenzie Mountains of the Northwest Territories in 2002. The merciless country tested us in unimaginable ways, but it was the toll on my feet that made me want to lay down and die. When blisters became freakish gashes, I knew we had to design and build a better boot that could keep up with the needs of a high-country mountain hunter.
...with the singular goal of making sure hunters, backpackers, and hikers never experience boot failure. Today, thousands of outdoor enthusiasts confidently wear Kenetrek boots to live their passions.
Jim Winjum is a leading authority on footwear design for mountain hunting. After receiving an engineering degree from Montana State University, Jim went to work for Schnee's Boots in Bozeman designing and developing all of their footwear for over 18 years. When Schnee’s Boots sold in 2005, Jim's passion for backcountry hunting and the equipment required to participate in these adventures led Jim (and his partners) to found Kenetrek Boots in Bozeman, Montana.
Jim's passion for the outdoors is made evident through his hunting success. He has taken the Grand Slam of North American Sheep with a rifle, and most recently, just completed his Archery Grand Slam of North American Sheep. This makes him just the 70th recorded successful Archery Slam ever. Jim has hunted all over the world, being fortunate enough to harvest 17 of the species of North American Big Game Animals - 13 of those with a bow and arrow.
Jim's hunting experience gives him first hand knowledge of what hunters experience in the field. This enables him to continue to improve Kenetrek Boots. Jim is a well known conservationist, spokesperson for youth education and hunting, and also plays a key roll in supporting wildlife stewardship and conservation based organizations. Some of these include Dallas Safari Club, SCI, Wild Sheep Foundation GSCO, and the NRA. Kenetrek's mission is to provide backcountry hunters with the best footwear and accesorries possible allowing them to enjoy their experience and minimize the misery that often goes with these adventures.
